images[1]The power of social media today is mind boggling. If you are not in get in. twitter.com, twellow.com, facebook.com, linkedin.com,RSS Feeds, Blogs, youtube.com, myspace.com, and a list I can barely keep up with. Friends that  joke, ones you poke. Tweets and retweets, friends to greet, the people you can meet. Networking from the comfort of your home, with a Facebook family you are never alone. Information, inspiration, saturation and yes domination. For those that lead the pack there is no going back. We are entering a new era. Everything is changing, the way we get our information, pay our bills, listen to music, catch the news, watch movies and operate our businesses. It is all happening with the click of a mouse. At lightning speed, in less than three seconds you can find thousands of answers to questions you didn’t know you had. Good or bad the eight hour work day is now the twenty four hour way of life. The only thing you can’t get on the internet is love or can you?

Ok valid point and a much more positive spin on the merging of divorced families today. Well I would like to take a moment to introduce to you my BONUS daughter, Kacie Finance. Beautiful and brilliant with an excellent voice she has been singing since she was four.  An NYU graduate with a great GPA, like many United States college graduates she has found it difficult to land the “old fashion” 9-5 M-F with benefits. In fact even with her brains, beauty, sweet smile and charming personality she is finding it difficult to make ends meet with multiple roommates. Not exactly on her “What I want for myself when I graduate” list. On the bright side her situation has forced her out of her comfort zone and she used her voice to audition for the show Glee which follows American Idol. Her audition requires stars posted on her profile like voting at the polls. Here is the link: http://www.myspace.com/gleeauditions?link=530418212 Let me know what you think. If you feel she has what it takes please give her a gold star she has certainly earned it. Thank you in advance for your suport. Kacie’s photo courtesy of http://www.saintongeportrait.com/

Why Should You & Mom Go To The Doctor Together?

iStock_000009839183XSmall - CopyGone are the days of doctors making house calls. Let’s face it there are doctors and medical specialists for everything. Want to see one? You will wait health insurance or not it doesn’t matter. Doctors are overbooked and their expertise in high demand. Treating a countless number of patients it is not humanly possible to keep track of every individual health issue of every single one of their patients. While we long to be treated as a paying customer at the doctor’s office we are instead squeezed in with only a few moments to state what it is that is ailing us. We fumble get confused and are afraid to waste the doctor’s time. What about our past health history, the meds we take along with our supplements?

Our society has gone from the doctor making the house calls to the patient doing their own medical research from home on their computer. Not getting the results you want, do your homework. That’s right our health our responsibility. A staple resource I often use is http://www.webmd.com . Here you will find most all the information you need to research your medical conditions, meds, supplements, symptoms etc. Have a parent or child who cannot do their medical homework or is unable to ask the right questions during their visit to the doctor? Guess what you’re up! Read up and accompany your loved one on their visit. If you are shy or intimidated then have a loved one accompany you on your visit. Asking the right questions based on your recent research is the best way to ensure the patient (you or your loved one) gets the most out of the visit to the doctor and is a crucial step in receiving the proper medical attention.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions it is after all your appointment. Don’t be afraid to take your time, YOU ARE A PAYING CUSTOMER. Can’t remember everything bring a list and refer to it during the visit. I bring a list and cross things off as they are addressed. In fact I often take notes when the doctor speaks in case I need to refer to them at a later date. If the doctor uses a term I don’t understand, I ask what the term means. Are you unsure what it is the doctor is actually telling you? Ask the doctor to repeat it or explain it in a way that you can understand. When you leave you will not only be well informed you will feel better knowing  that you did everything in your power to acquire the best possible medical opinion for a loved one or yourself.

Ask Nannette – No Daughters: No Problem

For the many years that I have been fortunate enough to be in business for myself I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people along the way. As an employer I count my lucky stars for the many people who have worked for me throughout the years. I applaud so many small business owners who have combined their own pay cuts with small employee cuts to save jobs and retain their veteran help.

Many of these owners have found ways to cut or shave a few employee hours here and there so that all of their employees can keep their jobs as well as their benefits. In these tough economic times all the bad can sometimes over shadow the good. I know plenty of small business owners who have been making personal sacrifices for their employees and continue to do so. I know their employees appreciate it and I think they should be recognized. This type of owner should know they have actually saved families and plenty of them. That doesn’t pay the bills but it can fill your soul with pride.

I once heard a business owner say that at the end of each day 90% of his assets walk out the door and his job is to make sure they come back. I had subscribed to that general thought process long before I heard him put it in that context. Quite a statement but so true, what would happen to your company if the employees never walked back in? I sometimes think today some business owners forget the importance of their employees.

The girls (well they are young women now) that work for me at Bangle and Clutch are incredible. Yes, they care about our customers, our company and me but it doesn’t stop there. They treat my business like it is actually their own. Let me give you an example. We don’t have a time clock we have the honor system. So when you work you hand write in your own hours. Ok maybe you can’t do that at a Fortune 500 company because someone might write in for an extra five minutes right? I will tell you these girls don’t. It is called trust and respect.

Well frost my own cake; the girls that work for me at Bangle and Clutch have often put in their own personal time outside the brick and mortar without ever being asked and requesting nothing in return. Guess what? When they shop even with friends they keep their eyes and ears open for information. Tons of information I couldn’t keep up with on my own. They do it automatically without asking for anything in return.

While I have two great sons of whom I am very proud, I would have adopted the girls that work for me in a second. They are kind, good hearted, hard working, always willing to go the extra mile and put in the extra time. They don’t step up to the plate they jump.

I would of course like to publicly thank them for all of their contributions through the years without them I would not be where I am today. I would specifically like to thank Courtney Lukas and Erin Sullivan for their help with the website. I would also like to introduce to you Courtney’s sister Christine Lukas she is the author of the blog post Embrace Your Art Form: Fashion Junkies Unite.
